In the USA the availability of slot machines is regulated by state governments. In numerous states special gaming control boards have been established in order to regulate the possession and use of slot machines. There is only one state where the use of slot machines is not generally restricted for both private and public use, namely Nevada. In some states, such as New Jersey for example, slot machines are allowed only in hotel-casinos. In others, for example Missouri, Iowa, or Indiana slot machines are only allowed on licensed riverboats, or barges which are permanently anchored.
Native American casinos, however, need to reach a pact with the state in order to get permission for running slot machines. In such cases the state is entitled to receive a percentage of the revenue from the slot machines.
